Nantucket Police Station

Location: Nantucket, MA
Project Type: New Facility
Project Cost: $15.5 Million
Completion: 2011
Square Footage: 35,000

Kaestle Boos Associates has designed a new 35,000 s.f. police facility for the Town of Nantucket which is currently under construction. Phase I of the project includes a new facility designed to house the police and sheriff departments. Features of the police station included a 2-bay sally port, prisoner processing and detention area, evidence processing, state-of-the-art communications/dispatch/9-11 call center, and storage area, offices, and records room. Sustainable features include geothermal heating and cooling systems, daylighting controls, occupancy sensors, recessed walk-off mats, and environmentally sensitive and native plantings throughout the site. Great care was taken to maintain the bicycle path which runs in front of the new facility while providing for the safety of both staff and visitors. Site master planning also allowed for the maximum use of the site while maintaining areas of the property for future use. Extensive permitting was also required to meet endangered and protected species and Historic District regulations. The design of the facility also meets the Island’s Historic District Commission guidelines.
