Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc. completed a system-wide study for the Town of Bourne which evaluated the condition of all elementary and secondary school facilities, with a particular assessment of compliance with local and state code requirements. The new Bournedale Elementary School was completed and opened for the 2009-2010 school year. The facility, which combines students from two schools, houses Grades Pre-K-4. The compact design is designed to support 660 students with a total of 24 classrooms: 3 Pre-K, 5 kindergarten, and 4 classrooms each for grades 1-4. Additional features of the school include a gymnasium, media center, computer lab, tutorial rooms, an art room with a kiln, and a full kitchen and servery. The cafetorium is a multi-functional space providing a space for performances and community use. Color is used throughout the school to not only brighten the corridors but also act as a way-finding system for students. The site features separate bus, parent and Pre-K drop-offs, separate playground areas for older and younger students; as well as new high-performance, natural grass multi-purpose playfields. Green features for the school include a white reflective roof, a ventilation displacement system providing a constant supply of fresh air to classrooms, daylighting sensors which adjust the lighting levels as daylight enters the room, and a centralized digital climate control system.
