The conversion of the Arts Magnet School to the 600-student Ross/Woodward Pre K-8 School, including an addition and complete renovation, was an exciting and challenging project for the design team. The addition features a kitchen and cafetorium, which functions as a cafeteria and/or an auditorium for students and the public.
To achieve necessary separation of the academic wing from community-use spaces, the addition was attached to the north side of the building, creating a dynamic façade that mimics an abstract form of a fluttering Betsy Ross Flag. This dramatic "flag wall", highly visible from major roads and interstates leaves a lasting impression on New Haven's visitors.
Award Winner! KBA recently won the Pittsburgh Corning 2004 Circle of Excellence Award, which recognizes designs for use of glass blocks as a prominent architectural feature, including the aesthetic and visual impact of its use within the project, and problem-solving design solution.
